Designing an optimized composite laminate requires finding the minimum number of layers, and the best fiber orientation and thickness for each layer. To date, several optimization methods have been introduced to solve this challenging problem, which is often non-linear, non-convex, multimodal, and multidimensional, and might be expressed by both discrete and continuous variables. These optimization techniques can be studied in two parts: constant stiffness design and variable stiffness designs. This paper concentrates on the first part, which deals with composite laminates with uniform stacking sequence through their entire structure. The main optimization methods in this class are described, their characteristic features are contrasted, and the potential areas requiring more investigation are highlighted. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. This paper presents a research work on stacking sequence design optimisation for multilayered composite plate using a parallel/distributed evolutionary algorithm. The stacking sequence of fibres has a dramatic influence on the strength of multilayered composite plates. Multiple layers of fibre-reinforced material systems offer versatility in engineering material design due to the fact that the ...
متن کاملOptimization of Hybrid Composite Laminate Based on the Frequency using Imperialist Competitive Algorithm
Imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) is a new socio-politically motivated global search strategy. The ICA is applied to hybrid composite laminates to obtain minimum weight and cost. The approach which is chosen for conducting the multi-objective optimization was the weighted sum method (WSM). The hybrid composite Laminates are made of glass/epoxy and carbon/epoxy to combine the lightness and...
متن کاملAn Experimental Investigation on Fracture Analysis of Polymer Matrix Composite under Different Thermal Cycling Conditions
Fracture analysis of glass/epoxy composites under different thermal cycling conditions is considered. Temperature difference, stacking sequence, fiber volume fraction and number of thermal cycles are selected as the experimental design factors. The Taguchi method is implemented to design of the experiment and an apparatus is developed for automatic thermal cycling tests. The tensile tests are d...
متن کاملDesigning nacre-like materials for simultaneous stiffness, strength and toughness_ Optimum materials, composition, microstructure and size
Nacre, bone and spider silk are staggered composites where inclusions of high aspect ratio reinforce a softer matrix. Such staggered composites have emerged through natural selection as the best configuration to produce stiffness, strength and toughness simultaneously. As a result, these remarkable materials are increasingly serving as model for synthetic composites with unusual and attractive ...
